The first U.S. Mother’s Day recognition was on May 10, 1908, in two different locations. Anna Jarvis orchestrated each of the events, with one honoring the memory of her late mother by sending 500 white carnations to Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, W. Va. She also held a Mother’s Day celebration in her own hometown of Philadelphia, PA to honor all mothers. Thus began a beautiful tradition.

If you have plans to honor your mother this Sunday, you likely have a host of ideas that may revolve around food, flowers, and cards. Here are a few others that moms online suggested:

  • Give her the tv remote for the entire day and evening.

  • Take pictures of mom with the kids (moms often take all the pictures and have few with her in them, especially with her children).

  • Collect those pictures and hop online to make her a special photo book.

  • Pack a picnic and take mom out for a quiet nature walk at Meijer Gardens (GR), Hemlock Crossings (Holland), or at Saugatuck Dunes (May 11 looks like a perfect sunny, warm day.)

To our mothers and the memories we hold dear, Happy Mother’s Day.
